PRAN-RFL, Hamko Lease 3 Closed Jute Mills; PM Tarique Rahman Attends Contract Signing

DHAKA — In a major push to revive the country's historic jute sector through private investment, the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) signed lease agreements on Tuesday with PRAN-RFL Group and Hamko Group to restart three closed state-owned jute mills.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was present at the signing ceremony, according to a press release from the Prime Minister’s Press Wing.

Distribution of the Mills

Under the terms of the agreement:

  • PRAN-RFL Group has taken over two facilities: National Jute Mills Limited in Sirajganj and Star Jute Mills Limited in Khulna.

  • Hamko Group has secured the lease for Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills Limited in Khulna.

The lease agreement was signed by BJMC Chairman Brigadier General Md. Kabir Uddin Sikder on behalf of the corporation, while Company Secretary Aminur Rahman signed for PRAN-RFL Group and Managing Director A.T.M. Mostafa signed on behalf of Hamko Group.

Job Creation and Economic Returns

The Prime Minister’s Press Wing highlighted that reopening these long-dormant mills under private management will boost local employment and industrial output.

Once fully operational, the three mills are expected to generate employment for at least 11,629 people and generate a combined potential turnover of approximately BDT 1,175 crore annually.

Progress on BJMC Mill Privatization

During the event, officials shared an update on the government's initiative to lease out state-run jute mills to private operators. Out of 25 closed BJMC mills:

  • 20 mills have been selected for private sector operations under lease agreements.

  • 14 mills have completed the lease process and been handed over to their respective leaseholders.

  • 9 mills have already resumed active production.

The event was attended by Minister for Commerce, Industry, and Textiles & Jute Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Minister of State for Textiles & Jute Shariful Alam, Secretary of Textiles & Jute Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, along with senior officials from BJMC and the recipient private companies.
